About The Rivers Estate

The Rivers Estate is located to the southeast of Ipswich town and just a short drive away from its busy centre. It consists of 10 roads named after famous rivers from up and down the country, namely the Severn, the Trent, the Lea, the Medway, the Oulton, the Mersey, the Derwent, the Wroxham, the Dereham and the Wye. These ten roads are neatly sandwiched between the two large public green spaces of Holywells Park and Landseer Park. Cliff Lane is also considered part of the Rivers Estate.

The play area of Holywells Park has around 20 pieces of children's play equipment, along with several sheltered picnic areas, and attracts youngsters from all over Ipswich. The undulating Landseer Park offers a BMX track and mountain biking routes. The BMX track is well maintained, with jumps suitable for riders of all abilities. It offers some big doubles, an 8 pack, some small doubles and triples. The local BMX club has been running for over 20 years and they invite riders of all ages and levels of experience to join in.

The roads that go to make up the Rivers Estate are quite wide and the majority of the houses benefit from off street parking, if not, a garage. There was obviously no shortage of space when these homes were built as with few exceptions, they have quite large gardens to the front and rear and many of them have, over the years, been extended in one way or another to increase the size of the accommodation on offer.

The Rivers is predominantly an area of 1930's built, bay fronted, 3 bedroomed semis and detached homes with the occasional 4 bed, the result of a sympathetic extension and a small number of bungalows. It is a very popular development, which is well served by a parade of shops featuring a beauty salon, butchers, a Chinese takeaway, a bakery, a hairdresser's, a carpet shop, an electrical shop and a newsagent. The shops are right next to Holywell's Park.

The local 4 and 4a bus routes serve the community at weekends whilst during the week, the number 6 bus provides regular trips into Ipswich town centre via the Gainsborough area and Ipswich railway station. This in turn, provides a fast and frequent connection to London's Liverpool St station.

Three primary schools serve the needs of the community's youngsters and the nearby Holywells High School takes on the older children. There is a large estate pub in the area, with the rather unlikely name of The Margaret Catchpole. Margaret was a legendary horse thief in Suffolk who once worked with the Rev. Richard Cobbold. It was he who wrote "The History of Margaret Catchpole", a novel based upon the true story of how Margaret, a fallen woman, made good after her transportation to Australia. As for the pub, although it is featured on CAMRA's national register, it is mainly targeted at a younger crowd with televised sport and loud music and is not really one for real ale lovers.
